Many years too late, I came to realise what an important person Yaltah was to me, and to my family. Both she and Yehudi were part of my musical conscience as a child musician and now an adult professional. Part of me wishes that I had been given more time and opportunity to know them both better.

We still have one or two of Yaltah's famous pots covered in droplets of royal blue and gold paint: I used to stare at one while on the phone, as it always sat there on my mother's bureau with an array of old pencils it.

My mother remembers how Yehudi always asked "How is Keith these days?", long after my grandfather Keith Pulvermacher had died. Yaltah once commented that both she and Yehudi loved Keith so dearly that they would deliberately but unconciously forget that he was gone. I certainly know that my grandfather found then both, especially Yaltah, to be a complete inspiration. Their music and kind friendship was never far from his mind, nor mine.

With love,

Dear Yaltah and Joel,

Canfield Gardens is empty now. Not long ago I walked up to the door of number 85 - I couldn't resist it - but such indulgencies are always unwise. Your coloured glass creations are all around us - what Yehudi called "Those atavistic things" - and your personal colours, those blues, purples, and golds, are subtly present in our home, including that tryptich of trout bones you made as a memento of that birthday lunch. Thank you for playing Mozart with me.

It has not only been an honor to know Yaltah's son, Lionel Rolfe, but also to
have traveled with him to London in 2001 for a Memorial Concert honoring Yaltah.

Yaltah was a remarkable person with a unique gift of music. Her music will live on for years to come and will always be a true reflection of her talents, beauty and appreciation for humanity.

I love Yaltah Menuhin's performance with Israel Baker of the Antheil Violin Sonata no. 2 (1948) on Music Library Recordings. Baker used a Strad for the occasion and the composer was present. As executor of Antheil's estate I've always treasured that performance.
